The Feldenkrais Method® uses curiousity, our innate ability to learn, and gentle movement to enhance comfort, increase function, and improve overall quality of life. Subtle, fascinating, and effective, the method is based in physics, neurology and physiology, and emulates the conditions under which the nervous system learns best.
During ATM® classes, students are guided through a series of structured movements, completed within the comfort level and ability of the student. Each lesson, through experiential learning, instructs on how to reduce unnecessary effort and recognize habits that may be in the way of ease and pleasure.
With Functional Integration® sessions (one on one work with a practitioner) lessons are individualized and the practitioner uses gentle, non-invasive touch to explore and demonstrate movement possibilities which may improve comfort and ease.
About Laurie
Like many people, I found the Feldenkrais Method because I was in pain. Luckily, while struggling with an intractable migraine, my 3rd neurologist referred me to a Feldenkrais Practitioner®. After 7 1/2 months of being in chronic pain I was able to return to work, part-time, with only 8 weeks of private lessons.
My approach is one of gentleness and kindness to self. Together we'll cultivate your curiousity and investigate the subtleties of what you may be experiencing. With the Feldenkrais Method, I've found that slowing down, honoring my curiousity, and taking the time to 'become aware' transfers directly from the mat or table and introduces an overall richness to life.
I also look for opportunities to do informal studies with my clients and am currently investigating how Feldenkrais can help a client with MS improve her short-term memory by improving her kinesthetic sense.
Can Feldenkrais® help?
The Feldenkrais® Method is based on our innate ability to learn so yes, nearly everyone can benefit – from those with chronic pain or neurological disorders to seniors intent on remaining mobile to those simply looking for more ease in their daily life. About Dr. Feldenkrais
Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais was a brilliant Physicist who wove together numerous scientific disciplines* to create the method and fix his own knees to avoid surgery. He was a pioneer in movement science and neuroplasticity (making use of the intelligence within our nervous system and our brain's ability to learn and adapt) decades ahead of the mainstream scientific community.
*For Science Geeks – Scientific disciplines include (but aren't limited to!) physics, neurology, physiology, mathematics, engineering, neurobiology, cognition, psychology, cybernetics, systems theory, and learning and developmental theory.
