About the Method
The Feldenkrais Method uses curiousity, our innate ability to learn, and gentle movement to enhance comfort, increase function, and improve overall quality of life. Subtle, fascinating, and effective, the Method is based in science (mainly cognition, neurology, and physiology) and emulates the conditions under which we learn best.
Feldenkrais can be experienced in two ways – through Awareness Through Movement (ATM) classes or private Functional Integration (FI) lessons. In both modalities, emphasis is on self-care, curiousity, and finding possibility.
During ATM classes, students are guided through a series of structure movements, completed within the comfort level and ability of each student. With Functional Integration, lessons are individualized and the practitioner uses gentle touch to explore and demonstrate movement possibilities.
Both modalities capitalize on experiential learning, instruct on how to reduce unnecessary effort, and highlight ineffective habits – habits that may be contributing to pain and precluding easy movement.

Like many people, I found the Feldenkrais Method because I was in pain. While struggling with an intractable migraine, my third neurologist referred me to a Feldenkrais Practitioner. After 7 1/2 months of being in chronic pain I was able to return to work, part-time, after only 8 weeks of private lessons.
I find that this Method is cumulative, transfers directly from the mat or table, and contributes an overall richness to all aspects of my life. I love that it allows me to dive deep and conduct informal studies with my students. Currently I am investigating how Feldenkrais can improve short-term memory by improving kinesthetic sense for a client with MS and how Feldenkrais impacts anxiety and boosts cognition in mTBI.

About Dr. Feldenkrais
Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais was a brilliant physicist who was searching for a way to avoid surgery on his knees. Curious about why he would feel pain at certain times but not others he studied and explored movement, successfully avoided surgery, and ultimately combined numerous scientific disciplines* into what is now the Feldenkrais Method.
